"GNP" was there to see the
action live!
"Kentucky Fighting Challenge is promoted by Tim Osborne
& Jimmy MC. They have been hosting events since 2003 and promote fights
across Kentucky. Their goal is to provide a legitimate sporting event to the
public while promoting the young upcoming fighters. This was their 5th KFC and
the house was packed! The card was full of action & I talked with a few
of the Fighters before the event and they were as electrified as the crowd.
Check out GNP'S coverage of the KFC 5".
This was going to be a great show, KFC
had championship belts made and tonight was to be the crowning of champions.
When they opened the doors you could see people lined up all the way across
the parking lot waiting to get in for a great night of action. The show
was held at the Continental Inn in Lexington, Ky. with great room rates
for those attending the fights and an indoor pool to relax in before or
after the show. This was to be the first of many times that groundnpound.org
would be represented at an event and we really want to thank Shaun &
Carl for stepping in the ring. The house was packed and the fighters were
pumped, with 20 fights on the card this was looking to be even better
than the last KFC, if that is possible. A big thanks goes out to Tim Osborne
for inviting us down and to the KFC crew for bringing it all together.
I also want to thank Casey Oxendine (& the rest of Team Oxendine)
for helping me out (you guys are the best).
I know what it is you all really want though so.... LETS GET TO THE ACTION!!! |

FIGHT # 1 Josh Shaffer -vs- Phil Bowen
The first fight of the night had the crowed pumped up. Both fighters meet
in the center of the ring and started exchanging blows with fury, Bowen
caught Josh with a straight right that staggered him and then Josh decides
to shoot for the takedown. Bowen sprawls defending Josh's attempts and
then forces Josh back, taking him down and ending in Josh's guard. Bowen
lands several to the body of Josh causing him to work even harder to get
off his back, then out of nowhere Josh slaps on an arm bar and is working
hard to sink it in deep. The fighters roll around with Bowen ending up
on top but still trapped in the arm bar, Bowen then lands a kick to Josh’s
face causing him to loosen the arm bar enough for Bowen to escape, stand
up & start raining in shots to the body. Bowen then turns Josh back
over and is throwing a few shots but the fighters have tangled up in the
ropes a bit so the ref moves it back to the center. Bowen immediately
postures up and starts to throw straight down while Josh is still on his
back. Josh lands a great up kick that appears to catch Bowen right on
the chin, causing him to take a step back. Josh then starts trying straight
kicks from the ground and Bowen lets him get back to his feet. Bowen comes
right back in swinging hard & Josh decides to clinch and gets a great
hip flip on Bowen sending him down to feel the canvas on his back for
a while. In just seconds Josh has the full mount but Bowen has a tight
hold on Josh and isn't allowing any room for him to strike, the bell sounds
ending round 1 and saving Bowen from a possible GROUNDNPOUND session.
ROUND 2: Bowen comes out throwing some heavy punches and is clearly the
better striker of the two. Josh gives it back but doesn’t seem to
have the same power and decides to shot trying to get it back on the ground.
Bowen sprawls back and Josh seems to pull guard but the fighters are in
the ropes so the ref steps in but notices a cut under Josh's eye so he
calls in the doc. After being checked out the fight is restarted standing
and Bowen comes out blasting again. Josh clinches and they go on the ropes,
Josh tries to trip up Bowen but its Bowen throwing Josh to his back. Bowen
stands and backs up letting Josh stand, its very clear he wants this fight
to happen on their feet. Bowen connects a couple more times causing Josh
to try to pull guard but ends up almost mounted, again Bowen stands up
letting Josh back up. Bowen connects a couple more times and Josh tries
pulling guard once more. As Josh stands its clear he is winded and maybe
even a little foggy and the ref stops the fight right then giving Bowen
the win.
Bowen wins by TKO in rnd 2 |
| FIGHT # 2 Dominic Ratcliff
-vs- Corey Howard
Dominic fought at KFC 4 and had a very impressive fight (with blue hair).
I was looking forward to seeing him fight again (& this time he had
yellow hair).
Corey started it of with a high outside crescent kick and Dominic rushed
him to the corner taking the fight to the ground. Dominic had Corey's
back but Corey just stood up, Dominic held on tight taking it back down.
Corey rolled in several directions, giving up the mount, and then his
back again, he started raining in a few back elbows but Dominic endured
and would not break his hold on Corey. Corey continued to scramble trying
to escape and eventually gets loose but Dominic is on him quick and takes
it back down once more. In a matter of seconds Dominic had his back again
ad this time sunk in the Rear Naked Choke deep causing Corey to tap immediately.
Dominic wins by RNC in rnd 1
FIGHT # 3 James Hagan -vs- Joe Dechaves
James is a Team Oxendine fighter (From GNP'S Hometown) and this was to
be his first MMA fight. Joe shot right off the bat and the fighters went
into the ropes, Hagen was defending well but the fighters went to the
ground, rolling with Hagen ending up on top in the full mount. Hagen was
trying to turn away from the ropes to avoid the ref standing them up and
loosing the mount but Joe had his arms locked up good, making it hard
but not impossible) for Hagen to get the position he wanted. After turning,
Hagen began throwing his shoulder to Joe's head trying to free his arms.
Joe had a solid lock on Hagen's arms but that didn’t stop Hagen
from slamming Joe into the mat and continuing to throw those shoulders
to the face & head. After several more shoulders dropped in by Hagen
he decides to go with a knee to the gut and what a knee it was, I felt
that blow at ringside. Hagen tries another knee but Joe is ready and begins
to buck & shuffle trying to free himself from the mount but all he
accomplished was giving up an arm to Hagen so Hagen just laid into Joe
and started striking with his free arm. Hagen finished out the round in
full mount raining in hard shoulders and a few heavy strikes, I couldn’t
wait for....
ROUND 2: It started out as a replay of round 1, Joe shoots right away
and Hagen defends, taking Joe down and landing in the full mount. Only
this time Hagen's arms aren’t tied up and he starts to rain down
some shots. Here is where the replay takes a 360 degree turn around, with
Hagen's arms free and the full mount locked in, he began to GROUNDNPOUND
Joe into the canvas, after a few seconds of him not defending the ref
stopped the fight declaring Hagen the victor.
Hagen wins by TKO rnd 2 |

FIGHT # 4 Casey Johnson -vs- Loren Bradley
Both fighters meet in the center of the ring feeling each other out, Bradley
threw a wide right that would have ended the fight had it connected. Casey
retaliates with a leg kick and the fighters continue to exchange for a
short feeling out. Casey comes in with another looping power punch &
connects, rocking Bradley for a split second. That was the first of a
flurry of punches thrown by both fighters, Casey was giving almost as
good as he got but Bradley was connecting with more power shots causing
Casey to try to clinch a few times. Bradley comes off a clinch with a
foot stomp and the fighters each back up a step as the crowd goes wild
showing their respect for that tremendous exchange of stand up action.
Bradley steps in with a great shot that rocks Casey just a bit but then
Bradley brings another strike that sends Casey to the mat flat on his
back. Bradley rushes in to start pounding but the ref makes it there first
to stop the fight giving Bradley the victory by KO
Bradley wins by KO rnd 1
FIGHT # 5 Daniel Boston -vs- James Foster
Both fighters came in ready to go, as Boston faked a few swings, James
stood his ground slowly closing the distance. James shoots for a takedown
but Boston defends causing James to just try and pull guard. As the fighters
went down, James rolled over to end up on top. Boston threw a few shots
to the head before trying to tie up James's arms but he was only able
to get the left & James was hammering in some nice body shots to the
ribs with both closed fist and palm strikes. James lands a few more to
the body and a couple to the head before Boston gets his right arm tied
up too, from there its just a matter of time before the ref stood the
fighters up to get it started again. James shoots again and the fighters
go down in the ropes, the ref turns the fighters and it starts up once
more. Boston has James tied up in a tight guard and has control of his
arms as well. James breaks free occasionally to fire in a shot or two
but James (having the reach) quickly ties up his arms every chance he
gets. James soon stands up bringing Boston with him and slams him into
the mat. This gives him the chance to land a few more and move Boston
into the corner but Boston keeps James tied up to keep the strikes down
& that’s how round one ends.
ROUND 2: James shoots driving Boston into the corner where the fighters
struggle for control. In the end, James just steps across forcing Boston
down on the matt with James ending up in the full mount. James is being
held down again but breaks free to land a few shots, which frees him up
completely. James immediately unleashes all those strikes held back by
Boston's guard, causing the ref to step in and stop the fight bringing
the victory to James.
James wins by TKO rnd 2

FIGHT # 6 Dan Doerner -vs- Andre Gear
Andre came straight out with a punch, which he missed, & a kick
to the midsection that connected & doubled Dan over for a split
second. Dan then shoots trying to take Andre down, Andre does a good
job defending but in the end Dan picks up Andre taking him down. Andre
quickly reverses the guard ending up on top. Andre tries to make some
room but Dan has him locked up good and Andre can just sneak in a shot
or two here & there. Dan tries to buck Andre off but only worsens
his situation giving up the full mount where Andre began raining in
some shots to the head. After several shots by Andre and a few bucks
by Dan, Dan reverses control and is back on top in Andre's guard. Andre
has control of Dan's arms and is hammering in some heel kicks to Dan's
ribs & kidneys. Dan breaks loose long enough to answer with a few
shots to the head but it appears Andre is getting the better of the
exchange. Andre continues with the heels to the side and back &
keeps Dan's arms tied limiting his strikes and power. Dan gets off a
few shots as the fighters move around on the ground & Andre keeps
bringing in the heel strikes with a few head and body shots with his
fists. Andre reverses the control and this time rolls into a kind of
tri-angle from the mount and starts raining in some shots to the head.
Dan tries to escape but Andre is in total control landing shots at will
and like a prayer answered for Dan the bell rings ending round 1
ROUND 2: Both fighters come in kicking & swinging, Dan connects
with a nice left then shots in taking Andre to the mat. The fighters
exchange a few blows and Andre begins working a tri-angle and quickly
has it sunk in causing Dan to tap giving up the match to Andre.
Andre wins by Triangle rnd 2
FIGHT # 7 Randy Hensley -vs- Paul Azarovitz
These guys came out swinging for the fences; Randy connects with a solid
punch sending Paul down. Randy is on him fast driving in several more
shots to the head & then sinking in a guillotine choke and laying
back to ride it out. Paul pulls free and the ref turns the fighters
away from the ropes and the action resumes. Paul begins landing several
shots to the head as he backs Randy up to the ropes again and out of
nowhere he postures up and starts raining down shots to Randy's head
& face. Randy stays calm and picks the shot he wants, grabs Paul's
arm and in just a second or 2 has Paul tapping out and saving the arm.
Hensley wins by Arm Bar rnd 1
FIGHT # 8 Shaun Strange -vs- Benji Clere
Shaun was the first fighter that was fighting for GNP I was excited
about this one. Benji gives up a little weight in this fight but he
looks to be a solid guy. Benji comes right across the ring delivering
a head shot and then clinches trying to take Shaun down. Shaun lands
one to the head right before Benji gets the heel trip and ends up on
top in the full mount. Benji starts hammering in shots to the head and
Shaun tries to hold him down to close the striking distance. Benji has
full control and Shaun has no choice but to tap do to strikes giving
the victory to Benji
Benji wins by Tap Out rnd 1

FIGHT # 9 Adam Mays -vs- Jasper Aldrige
Mays shoots immediately and drives Jasper to the ground, Jasper had a
slight guillotine but Mays pulls out and starts to work the ground game
landing a few shots to the head with elbows & fists. Jasper pulls
the guard tight to prevent Mays from gaining any distance but Mays continues
to land a couple shots here & there. Jasper attempts an arm bar causing
Mays to spin out giving up top control but he soon drives Jasper back
down and this time Mays has side control. Mays continues working the GROUNDNPOUND
with fists & knees to the body & head. Jasper starts to scramble
and Mays just moves right around and has his back with hooks sunk in.
Jasper tries to escape and has his neck protected then Mays sits back
up and starts throwing shots from behind and then trying to sink in the
choke a second time. After a few seconds of working his forearm in, Mays
gets the Rear Naked Choke causing Jasper to tap and giving the fight to
Mays.
May's wins by RNC rnd 1
FIGHT # 10 Charles Sutton -vs- Shaun Krysa
Shaun comes out and swings first, Charles answers but misses and Shaun
follows up with a leg kick. Charles shrugs his shoulders to respond to
the kick (as if it didnt hurt) but it was sure heard throughout the arena.
Shaun rushes in with a shot to the face then with a waist lock picks up
Charles and drops him to the mat. Charles had wrapped on a guillotine
during the pick up and was working to sink it deeper but Shaun ends up
pulling his head out. Shaun starts posturing up and landing shots to the
head, Charles tries to escape and attempts a triangle but its no use.
Shaun just rises up to escape and comes down with more shots to the head
and ending up in side mount. From there Shaun goes to north south position
and hammers in 2 knees, the second one causing the ref to stop the fight.
(Charles was taken to the hospital for precautionary measures but has
checked out fine and is ok)
Krysa wins by TKO rnd 1
FIGHT # 11 David Howard -vs- Ryan Farhat
Howard strikes first and then brings a front kick, Ryan lands a shot the
shoots taking Howard to the mat but in the ropes, after a second the ref
stands them up and Ryan shoots again slamming Howard to the ground once
more. Howard scrambles giving up his back and Ryan immediately sinks in
a Rear Naked Choke and falls back. Before they settle on the ground Howard
taps and the victory goes to Ryan.
Farhat wins by RNC Rnd 1 |
FIGHT # 12 Brandon Rogers -vs- Erick Jordan
Eric is another Team Oxendine fighter and a class act (as is most of
the other fighters I have meet at KFC). Eric came to the ring decked
out in his blue Gi with a cane, old gray haired wig and his box of chow
main noodles, when he shed his gear you could see his wild hair cut
with his lunch menu written in Chinese across his head. Eric was pumped
& ready. As the fighters approached each other Brandon started it
off with a straight kick, Eric then quickly closed the gap and with
a quick, hard & fast hip flip they went to the mat with Brandon
ending up on top. But it appeared that was exactly what Eric wanted;
he quickly transitioned into a triangle and from there into an arm bar
submitting Brandon in seconds. Just as colorful as Eric entered the
ring his victory dance over his trophy at the end was something the
crowed really enjoyed.
Eric wins by Arm Bar rnd 1
FIGHT # 13 Chris Larkin -vs- Ian Angel
Ian brings the first shots, a front kick & a shot to the head but
Larkin answers with a double leg pick up and slam to the mat. Larkin
takes side control and starts to land an elbow or two as Ian keeps moving
trying to escape and get back to his feet. Larkin lands a few more knees
to the body & head as Ian continues trying to escape. During one
attempt to escape Ian opens himself up and Larkin takes the full mount
where he begins a flurry of punches that will cause the ref to stop
the fight declaring Larkin the victor.
Larkin wins by TKO rnd 1
FIGHT # 14 Mike Hallenwager -vs- Bruce Workman
These fighters look big and I was ready for a slugfest. Mike starts
pushing the pace from the start backing Bruce up and throwing punches
along the way. Mike charges in several times trying for the takedown
and in a clinch on the ropes he gets it ending up in side mount throwing
down some elbows and forearms to the head. Workman's foot gets tangled
in the ropes so the ref brings them back to the center of the ring.
Back in side mount Mike continues raining in shots to the head as Bruce
rolls and pulls Mike into his guard. From there Mike's arms get tied
up and his striking is slowed a great deal. Mike continues trying to
break the guard and Bruce is getting in a shot or two but is mostly
hanging on and defending at this point. In a flurry Bruce kicks Mike
back and lands an up kick but Mike is quickly back on top. They go at
it for a few more seconds but the action has slowed and the ref stands
the fighters up. Both fighters throw a few shots and are soon in the
clinch exchanging knees & punches. Workman receives a low blow and
time is given to recover, as the fighters get back at it Workman lands
a shot to the head and a kick to the gut sending Mike down to one knee
but Mike grabs a single leg and attempts a takedown as the bell sounds
ending round 1
ROUND 2: Mike comes in lands a shot that fires Workman up, Workman starts
throwing some heavy shots to the head. Mike attempts to shoot a couple
times getting caught with head shots both times, the third time Mike
shoots he takes Bruce to the mat but Workman has him tied up and just
hangs on till the ref stands the fighters back up. Workman lands a couple
nice head shots followed by a knee and a soccer kick, which causes the
ref to check Mike out & restart the fight. Workman comes back in
with a shot and another knee, which sends Mike face down to the mat.
Workman is on his back hammering in shots to the head until the ref
steps in giving the win to Workman.
Workman wins by TKO rnd 2

FIGHT # 15 Carl Click -vs- Kenny Jerrell
Carl was our other GNP fighter and big props go to him for taking the
fight on just days notice & bringing it to the ring in the name of
GNP. Both fighters touch gloves and then circle for a split second before
Carl shoots for a takedown; Kenny sprawls out and starts throwing in shots
to the head. Carl continues to reach for Kenny's leg trying to sit him
out but Kenny just stands up pushing off on Carl's back. As Kenny is standing
he delivers a tremendous shot to the head that rocks Carl and sends him
turning away and backing up. Kenny immediately follows in with several
big shots to the head sending Carl to his knees and bringing the ref in
to stop the fight, giving the win to Kenny.
Jerrell wins by TKO rnd 1
FIGHT # 16 Ira "Hurricane" Boyd -vs- Dan Swift
Many people had come to see this fight take place and the room was full
of energy from the crowd. The bell rings and Ira charges across the ring
throwing a kick but missing. Dan then attempts a fake shoot and Ira drops
his hands giving up a free shot. Dan swings catching the top of his head
but Ira comes back with 2 shots, the first rocking Dan slightly and the
second sending him to the ground. Ira jumps on Dan and the fighters end
up in north south position on their knees where Ira is landing body shots
and a couple knees to the head. Ira then stands trying a soccer kick as
Dan rolls to his back; Ira then jumps in dropping some shots and ending
up in Dan's guard. Dan has control of Ira's arms keeping him from getting
off to many shots while Dan starts working the guard and moving it up
higher looking for a possible arm bar or triangle. Ira wants no part of
Dan's submissions so as he escapes the attempt he stands up and delivers
a few leg kicks to Dan while he is on the ground and follows up with a
jumping stomp. After a few more leg kicks to Dan while he is on his back,
Ira jumps in with another stomp attempt, but this time Dan is ready and
Ira jumps right into a deep triangle choke. Dan locks it in and begins
to pull tight as Ira scrambles trying to free himself but he only sinks
it in deeper. In no time at all Ira begins to tap and the ref has to come
in and make Dan break the choke, giving Dan the victory and a chance to
do his victory dance as the crowd goes wild.
Swift wins by Triangle rnd 1 |

FIGHT # 17 Tim Stout (Light Heavyweight Title)
Stout wins by No Show & becomes the Light Heavyweight Champ
FIGHT # 18 James Escaloni -vs- Billy Ayash
This bout was for the Cruiserweight belt, I saw Billy fight at KFC 4 and
he was a very exciting fighter to watch, the crowd was standing and ready
to see who would walk out the CHAMP! Billy started it off with a leg kick
and then the fighters wet into a very explosive clinch. Going from side
to side and off the ropes and into the corner, these guys were moving
each other with some power. When it went to the corner James throws a
knee but it lands a bit south sending Billy down from the low blow. Billy
as given time to recover and then the fight was restarted. Billy comes
in swinging and James takes the clinch, it goes into the ropes where Billy
takes down James ending up on top. James attempts an arm bar but in RAMPAGE
JACKSON Fashion" Billy starts to pick up James for a slam but James
releases the arm bar. Billy rushes in to finish it up but James grabs
his leg and trips Billy sending him to his back. James immediately jumps
on Billy and the fighters begin to roll exchanging top position and then
to their knees. As both fighters stand James delivers a knee and then
they clinch in the ropes. James is pushing the fight and backing Billy
up with strikes and takedown attempts until James succeeds on one and
they end up on the ground in the ropes. James gets side control and Billy
just stands right up, as Billy stands, James grabs at his leg and Billy
steps out and creates some distance between the fighters. James shoots
in and the fighters go to their knees as Billy sprawls out and starts
working a guillotine choke. Billy locks in the choke, stands up and leans
back causing James to tap immediately making Billy the new KFC Cruiserweight
Champ.
Ayash wins by Standing Guillotine rnd 1 & becomes the Cruiserweight
Champ
FIGHT # 19
Braden Workman -vs- Justin Villella
This was another Championship match in the Heavyweight Division, who would
walk out with the belt? Justin starts off the fight with a leg kick, Workman
then throws a straight right and Justin shoots for the takedown. Workman
sprawls defending the takedown but Justin is persistent and continues
to try the takedown until the fighters get into the ropes and the ref
breaks them for a restart. Workman connects with a solid right followed
by a knee to the head and Justin attempts the takedown again. This time
Justin walked into a guillotine and Workman just jumps up to pull guard
and takes Justin down, Justin's hand is caught in the ropes so the ref
breaks the hold to remove his hand then sets it back up and restarts them.
Justin pulls out of the choke and postures up raining down a few shots
to Workman's head while Workman starts trying to set up a triangle. The
fighters get in the ropes so the ref brings them back to center ring and
restarts the action on the ground, Justin continues to rise up and hammer
in blows to the head. Workman is answering back a few shots but is taking
more then he is giving back. Workman continues trying to work the triangle
and then out of nowhere he slaps on an arm bar causing Justin to scramble
for an escape. Workman does a very nice transition from the arm bar into
a triangle and just locks it in and waits for the tap. Crowning Workman
the new KFC Heavyweight Champion.
Workman wins by Triangle rnd 1 & becomes the Heavyweight Champ
